Email is where work arrives, but rarely where it gets finished.
A single message can require checking a calendar, searching meeting notes, editing a document and remembering to follow up days later. Most email clients leave that surrounding work to the user.
Stockholm-based Scape has raised $3.2 million to build an inbox that handles more of those steps before the message is opened. The company’s backers include Y Combinator, General Catalyst and FundersClub, alongside angel investors from the technology sector.
Founded by Melvin Hagberg and Elis Hodzic, Scape operates with a five-person team in Stockholm. The company emerged from Y Combinator’s Summer 2024 program and is opening its product to users through an early-access release.
A reply prepared with the task already completed
Scape uses context from emails, calendars, meeting transcripts and attachments to prepare responses for review.
The platform can suggest a meeting time, complete a form, modify an attachment and add the finished file to a draft. Messages are not sent automatically; users review and approve the output before it leaves the inbox.
This moves Scape beyond AI-assisted writing. Its product is designed to complete the administrative steps surrounding a conversation rather than simply produce better email text.
Attention replaces unread count
Scape surfaces messages that require action while organizing newsletters, notifications and lower-priority emails through custom labels.
It also identifies next steps, tracks unanswered requests and returns follow-ups to the inbox when they become relevant. Its local meeting recorder supports Zoom, Google Meet, Microsoft Teams, FaceTime and in-person conversations, with transcription across 99 languages.
Connecting meetings with email gives future drafts more context, but it also places significant responsibility on Scape’s privacy, security and data-retention controls.
The harder problem is replacing habit
Scape enters a category already served by Gmail, Microsoft Outlook and specialist products such as Superhuman. Its distinction is that it wants to perform the work inside messages rather than only organize or summarize them.
The company plans to generate revenue through subscriptions, although pricing has not been disclosed. Its immediate challenge is earning enough trust to prioritize private communications and work across sensitive business documents without making incorrect decisions.
Scape does not need to prove that professionals dislike email overload. It must prove that an AI inbox can become useful enough for them to change a habit built over decades.
